Best DIY Mini Split Systems You Can Install Yourself

The best DIY mini split for most people is the MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen 12K, because it pairs a 25 ft pre-charged quick-connect line with a warranty that MRCOOL says does not depend on a contractor. Before you buy, know that EPA’s Q&A says connecting pre-charged lines on an R-410A mini split requires Section 608 certification. Some sellers say quick-connect kits are exempt, and we found no EPA statement on R-454B kits, so check first.

Specifications and ratings are each brand’s own; fit notes draw on ENERGY STAR, DOE and manufacturer documents. We have not tested or used these systems.

Best DIY overall#1

MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen 12K

This is the sensible first system to look at if you are buying online. The kit ships with a 25 ft pre-charged quick-connect line set, the brand rates heating down to −13°F, and MRCOOL states its DIY warranty does not depend on a licensed contractor. You can still hire one, and many buyers should.

Why it stands out

  • Brand-rated 23.5 SEER2 and heat operation to −13°F on a 115V circuit.
  • Longest included line set in the MRCOOL DIY family: 25 ft, pre-charged, with a brand-stated no-vacuum connection.
  • 5-year parts and 7-year compressor warranty per MRCOOL, with no registration required; labor is not covered.
Capacity12,000 BTU
SEER223.5
Power115V
Heat rated to−13°F
Install25 ft pre-charged quick-connect kit

Good fit if

  • One room up to about 550 sq ft (the brand’s figure).
  • You want a warranty that does not rest on a licensed install.
  • You can put in a dedicated 115V, 20A circuit.

Skip it if

  • Price matters most: a professionally installed LETO or Serena costs less to buy.
  • You have no dedicated circuit and no electrician lined up. It does not plug into a wall outlet.

EPA’s published Q&A says connecting pre-charged lines on an R-410A mini split requires Section 608 certification. Some sellers say otherwise for quick-connect kits. This system uses R-454B and we found no EPA statement on such kits, but EPA’s Section 608 page says the rules cover substitutes such as HFCs, so do not assume the R-410A answer leaves it out. Check with EPA and your local code office before you self-install.

Best lower-cost DIY#2

MRCOOL DIY Select 12K

The lowest-cost route into MRCOOL’s no-vacuum range. MRCOOL’s own FAQ calls Select the most cost-effective option in its DIY lineup, and you give up line length, efficiency and warranty term to get there.

Why it stands out

  • Pre-charged quick-connect kit on a 115V circuit, for rooms up to about 550 sq ft per the brand.
  • Brand-rated 17.5 SEER2, the lowest in this guide but above ENERGY STAR’s 15.2 floor for split heat pumps.
  • Very low brand-rated indoor sound at the lowest fan setting: 17.5 dB.
Capacity12,000 BTU
SEER217.5
Power115V
Heat rated toNot stated by brand
Install11.5 ft pre-charged quick-connect kit

Good fit if

  • The outdoor unit can sit within 11.5 ft of line run.
  • A lower purchase price matters more than warranty length.

Skip it if

  • You need a longer line: 11.5 ft is short and cannot be cut or extended in the field without breaking the seal.
  • You want a longer warranty: MRCOOL lists 1 year parts and 2 years compressor.
  • You need a stated low-temperature rating: we could not find one for this model.

We found no established no-vacuum system under our $900 Budget line, so the lower-cost DIY choice sits in the Mid-range tier.

Best DIY for a large room#3

MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen 24K

A 24,000 BTU quick-connect system for open-plan spaces. MRCOOL lists coverage up to 1,050 sq ft, while ENERGY STAR’s room chart puts 24,000 BTU at up to 1,500 sq ft, so treat either figure as a starting point and ask for a load calculation.

Why it stands out

  • Brand-rated 22.7 SEER2 and heat operation to −13°F.
  • 25 ft pre-charged line set with a brand-stated no-vacuum connection.
  • 5-year parts and 7-year compressor warranty per MRCOOL.

SEER222.7

Heat rated to−13°F
Install25 ft pre-charged quick-connect kit

Good fit if

  • A large open room with a 208/230V circuit.
  • You want the DIY warranty terms at a larger size.

Skip it if

  • You have no 230V circuit.
  • One person is doing the lift: MRCOOL’s catalog lists the outdoor unit at 122.8 lb.
  • It is a bedroom: the brand rates top fan speed at 54 dB indoors.

MRCOOL Easy Pro 12K

A step up from Select in efficiency and low-temperature rating, without paying for the 5th Gen 25 ft kit. On most days the deciding factor is the price gap to the 5th Gen 12K.

Why it stands out

  • Brand-rated 19.5 SEER2, against 17.5 for Select.
  • Heat operation rated to −13°F by the brand.
  • Pre-charged quick-connect line on 115V.
Capacity12,000 BTU

InstallPre-charged quick-connect; length varies by version

Good fit if

  • You want more efficiency than Select and a stated cold rating.
  • The line length in the listing reaches your outdoor spot.

Skip it if

  • The price is close to the 5th Gen 12K on the day you buy: that one has 25 ft of line and a longer warranty.
  • You want the longer warranty, which depends on the version shipped.

MRCOOL Easy Pro 9K

A small-room quick-connect system for a bedroom, office or sunroom. MRCOOL lists coverage up to 400 sq ft, which lines up with ENERGY STAR’s room chart at 9,000 BTU.

Why it stands out

  • 9,000 BTU cooling and 10,000 BTU heating per the brand, on 115V.
  • Brand-rated 20.2 SEER2 and heat operation to −13°F.
  • Brand-rated 18 dB indoors at the lowest fan setting.

SEER220.2

InstallPre-charged quick-connect; length varies by version

Good fit if

  • A room up to about 400 sq ft where you want a no-vacuum kit.
  • You have, or can add, a dedicated 115V circuit.

Skip it if

  • You will hire an installer anyway: a LETO 9K costs less.
  • The warranty term matters: it depends on the version shipped (see below).

MRCOOL sells this in two versions. The 11.5 ft kit carries 3 years parts and 5 years compressor; the 16 ft kit carries 1 and 2. Check which one the listing ships. Klimaire DIY 9K

A non-MRCOOL quick-connect option for a small room. Klimaire’s kit runs longer than Easy Pro’s and has a higher SEER2, though this is the less-documented listing of the two.

Why it stands out

  • Brand-rated 24 SEER2 and heat operation to −13°F.
  • E-Z Kuick Connect line: 25 ft precharge and 49 ft maximum per Klimaire’s spec.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi; registered residential installs get 5 years parts and 7 years compressor if registered within 45 days.

InstallPre-charged quick-connect, up to 49 ft per brand

Good fit if

  • A room up to about 400 sq ft on 115V.
  • You prefer a brand other than MRCOOL.

Skip it if

  • You want the most widely documented listing.
  • You will not register within 45 days: unregistered coverage is 3 years parts.

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Measure the line run before you order

AC Direct says pre-charged sets come in fixed lengths and cannot be cut or extended in the field without breaking the seal. Plan the hole and outdoor spot first.

02

Budget for the electrician

A retailer estimates 2 to 4 hours for an electrician and 5 to 12 hours for a first-time install. Every unit needs its own circuit, and Filterbuy cites NEC requirements for a disconnect in sight.

03

Read the warranty before you drill

MRCOOL excludes faulty installation and alteration, and the warranty stays with the original address. AC Direct also calls improper torque the most common cause of long-term leaks; if a certified technician connects the lines, that step is theirs.

Honest note

DIY is not automatically cheaper or simpler. Consumer Reports recommends a professional in most cases, HomeGuide calls DIY “not recommended,” and Angi reserves it for “only the most advanced DIYers.” We list these kits because they suit some buyers, not because we think everyone should install one. We cannot tell you the legal position for your home.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is it legal to install a DIY mini split yourself?

We cannot give you a yes. EPA’s Q&A says connecting or disconnecting pre-charged lines on an R-410A mini split requires Section 608 certification, while the retailer AC Direct says a pre-charged MRCOOL DIY install does not. We found no EPA statement on R-454B or quick-connect fittings, so ask EPA and your local code office.

Do DIY mini splits need a vacuum pump?

Quick-connect kits are sold as no-vacuum: MRCOOL and Klimaire both state this. But pre-charged does not mean no-vacuum everywhere. DELLA’s Optima is pre-charged, yet its FAQ says you need to vacuum the system. Check the manual for the exact model, and read EPA’s position on pre-charged lines first.

How long does a DIY mini split install take?

A retailer estimates 5 to 12 hours for a first-timer on a pre-charged single zone, often over two days, plus 2 to 4 hours for an electrician. Bob Vila says professional companies finish most installs in 5 to 10 hours.

What tools do I need for a DIY mini split?

Use your model’s manual for the tool list. DOE says the wall hole is generally about three inches, and AC Direct lists a torque wrench at $100 to $150. EPA’s Q&A says connecting pre-charged lines on an R-410A mini split requires Section 608 certification, so settle who connects the lines first.

Does a DIY mini split void the warranty?

Not on MRCOOL’s DIY series, by MRCOOL’s own statement, though faulty installation is excluded. Klimaire offers a DIY series warranty too. On other brands it can: Senville says DIY installation voids coverage, and DELLA limits non-professional installs to replacement parts.

Can I extend a pre-charged line set?

Not by cutting it. AC Direct says sets cannot be cut or extended in the field without breaking the seal, and it caps MRCOOL DIY total run at 75 ft using pre-charged extensions. EPA lists cutting a refrigerant line among activities reasonably expected to violate the circuit, so ask a Section 608 certified technician.
